Exempla Healthcare had been building their Dashboard-based performance framework for several years and had found that the spreadsheet-based system helped the organization develop much better views of critical measures. However, the executive team determined that this internally-built system of report cards was not capable of taking their performance to the next level because it lacked drill-down capabilities and was not able to effectively link performance improvement activities to the critical measures across the system’s three hospitals and 32 service lines.
“Performance measurement is the easy part. What our leadership needs is an ability to link performance improvement efforts to respective measures so we can see what work is being done, what plans are not being executed as effectively as they could be, and who is accountable,” explained Rob Beardall, MD, Exempla’s Chief Medical Information Officer. “This was the goal we had in mind when we chose to move our performance measures into ActiveStrategy Enterprise software.”
The ASE software system will be utilized to review the organization’s business performance, starting from the very top of the organization. The CEO will be able to click on a key strategic measure on his Balanced Scorecard and drill down to reveal information about the key drivers of this measure. ASE makes these linkages clearly visible to the CEO and all the owners of the drivers, allowing the organization to enact proactive improvement plans.
As Exempla builds more levels of “cascaded” performance measures, everyone from the Board of Directors down through the staff will be able to see if they are actually executing plans that will drive improved performance. This will help the organization improve coordination and alignment across the three hospitals.
